Hawker food and the infamous Chilli Crab

In this post I will write a little bit about my amazing food experience in Singapore – “Singapore Chilli Crab” being the highlight but not the only one. 

Chilli Crab was created in Singapore in a small restaurant in 1950s and quickly become the most popular dish in Singapore.  Marcus insisted that we have to try it since we were there and we managed to try three different Chilli Crabs and it was officially the best meals I have ever eaten in my life. It’s absolutely delicious and it’s my new obsession, it is now my mission to find the best chilli crab in Melbourne. If you are in Singapore you have to try the Chilli Crab not because it is so popular and everybody seems to be eating it but because it’s simply extremely good. When you are looking for Chilli Crab don’t be fooled by posh looking restaurant on Orchard Road , we ate the best Chilli Crab in a very cheap looking restaurant (plastic table and chairs etc) in Chinatown called The Chinatown Seafood Restaurant - great Chilli Crab and cheap booze. There was actually an independent seafood restaurant called Ah Hoi‘s Kitchen which happen to be attached to our hotel. We could enter through our swimming pool area, great as this meant we could have lunch at the restaurant and then have a swim after.  It is known to have the best Chilli Crab away from the coast if you believe the locals.

W tym poscie chce podzielic sie z wami moim niesamowitym doswiadczeniem jakim bylo jedzenie w Singapurze. Mowa tutaj oczywiscie o “Singapore Chilli Carb”, danie to bylo zdecydowanie moim ulubionym posilkiem.

Potrawa ta po raz pierwszy zostala przygotowana w latach 50-tych, w jednej z malych lokalnych restaruacji i bardzo szybko stala sie popularna w calym Singapurze. Marcus stwierdzil, ze skoro jestesmy tutaj to musimy sprobowac slynny Chilli Crab, udalo nam sie zjesc trzy rozne rodzeje Chilli Crab, w trzech roznych restauracjach. Z pelna swiadomoscia musze przyznac jest to oficjalnie moje ulubiona potrawa. Moja misja teraz jest znalezienie porownywalnie dobry Chilli Crab w Melbourne. Jesli bedziecie w Singapurze musiecie sprobowac ta potrawe, nie dlatego, ze wszyscy bedac tutaj jedza crab, ale dlatego, ze potrawa ta, jest po prostu niesmowita. Szukajac dobrego Chilli Crab nie kierujcie sie drogimi restauracjami na Orchard Road, my znalezlismy Chilli Crab w obskurnie wygladajacej restauracji (plastikowe krzestla, stoly etc) w Chinatown - The Chinatown Seafood Restaurant – niesamowite jedzenie, swietna obsluga i tani alcohol, czego wiecej trzeba od zycia?! Warta wspomnienia jest Ah Hoi’s restauracja, polaczona z naszym hotelem, znana jest jako najlepsza restauracja w Singapurze serwujaca Chilli Crab. Oczywiscie pojawilismy sie tam z misja spobowania innej wersji naszej ulubionej potrawy. Do restauracji tej dostac sie moglismy przez swimming pool, co oznaczalo dla nas lunch w restauracji i maly relax po, nad basemen. 

 

 

Night Safari, Botanic Garden – Orchid Garden

If you are in Singapore I personally think you should go to Botanic Gardens, it’s an amazing place so calm and pretty. It’s like a little paradise, very romantic.

The Night Safari was a good place to go as well. We arrived there a bit late as there was traffic because of the Bollywood Academy Awards. You can take tram or simply walk through the Safari but the tram has the guide. It’s a very dark, hot and humid place full of weird night animals from all over the world but primarily from Asia. Unfortunately I couldn’t take many pictures as we weren’t allowed to use the flash but I added a few of my favourite pictures from the Botanic Gardens and one from the Night Safari.

Jesli bedziecie w Singapurze polecam odwiedzenie Botanic Garden. Sliczne parki, piekna roslinnosc, bardzo spokojne, romatyczne miejsce. Doslownie maly raj na ziemi. Dodalam kilka moich ulubionych zdjec z tych gorodow.

Night Safari tez jest warte odwiedzenie. My dojechalismy tam z lekkim opoznieniem przez Bollywood Academy Awards, ktora wywolala niemielosiene korki. Safari mozecie zwiedzac z pociagu badz spacerowac. Bardzo ciemne, gorace, duszne miejsce wypelnione dziwnymi nocnymi zwierzetami z calego swiata, glownie jednak Azajtyckimi. Niestety nie moglam zrobic za wiele zdjec jakoze uzywanie lampy blyskowej bylo zabronione. 

 

Singapore - Sentosa

Finally I have internet back and I can continue updating my blog. I have been in Melbourne nearly 3 weeks and I love it so far but before I write more about my new life in Melbourne let me write few more posts about Singapore.  A place worth mentioning is Sentosa of course, some people say that it is awfully artificial and cheesy but I liked it. I have to say the beaches were not that great but there are a lot of attractions for both adults and kids. We went there on a Saturday expecting it to be packed and queues everywhere but we were pleasantly surprised to see that we were wrong. We bought quite a good deal for 4 attractions and started with a Segway ride which was great fun and not as difficult as I was thought it would be. Next we went on the Luge and Skyride which I would never do it if not for Marcus insisting that I should do it with him and wow this was really great fun. My favourite though was probably 3D Extreme Log Ride and I definitely recommend it to everybody. We then went to the Butterfly and Insect House.  If you like these types of attractions you should go there, I could even feed the parrots which was a great ending of our time at Sentosa.

Nareszcie mam internet i moge uaktualniac moj blog. Jestem w Melbourne juz prawie 3 tygodnie, ale zanim napisze wiecej na temat tego miasta  chce dodac jeszcze kilka postow o  Singaporu.  Miejsce warte opisania jest Sentosa, niektorzy uwazaja, ze wyspa ta jest brzydliwie sztuczna i troche tania, ja jednak bylam zadowolona ze spedzonej tam soboty.  Plaze nie sa sliczne musze przyznac ale jest tam duzo, naprawde fajnych atrakcji, zarowono dla dzieci jak i doroslych. Ku naszemu pozytywnemu zaskoczeniu mimo, ze wybralismy sie tam w sobote nie musielismy stac w kolejkach i walczyc o miesjca.  Kupilismy calkiem fajny zestaw 4 atrakcji. Zaczelismy od Segway przejazdzki – swietna zabawa i nie tak trudna jak przypuszczalam.  The luge and skyride, nie sadzilam, ze moglabym dobrowolnie zgodzic sie na taka forme spedzania wolnego czasu i jeszcze za to zaplacic, ale ku mojemu wielkiemu zdziwieniu swietnie sie bawilam. Moim ulubionym  miejsce bylo jednak 3D Extreme Log Ride, rewelacyjny, bardzo naturalistycznie zrobiony film. Butterfly and Insect House, jesli lubicie motyle I robacwto wszelakiego rodzaju to polecam. Ja bylam pod duzym wrazeniem, a karmienie papug bylo milym akcentem na zakonczenie naszego pobytu w Setnosie.

Singapore - The City that never sleeps

I didn’t expect Singapore to be as hot and humid as it was but thank God we had a swimming pool in the hotel and I have to admit swimming in the rain and in the night time was one of the highlights of our trip. On the first day we had a ride on a bumboat on the Singapore River, a very touristy thing to do but it was really good as it gave us a great idea of where everything was.  Everybody says how pretty Singapore is at night time and how great the food is and I must admit I couldn’t agree more. The culture here seems to be focused a lot around food, good eating and shopping. We could find very expensive food as well as very cheap street food. We love street food but had to do a lot of research to find the best areas.  For a good night out Clarke Quay is a cool area where you can drink and eat or simply go clubbing, it’s very busy and I guess you could compare it to Leister Square in London so not really my cup of tea but I can see why people like going there. I could not believe how cheap taxis were in Singapore, the opposite of booze – VERY EXPENSIVE. Transport is absolutely outstanding, air-conditioned, very modern stations, trains, extremely clean and very well organized. What really surprised me was that we had mobile phone reception underground and the train was full of people having conversations. It’s amazing in comparison with the appalling London Underground. They say that Singapore is a gateway to Asia as it is still very western but there were not as many European people there as I was expecting. Singapore is very little and 5 days was more than enough for us to see most of highlights. The Singapore Sling at The Long bar at Raffle’s Hotel and Singapore’s national dish Chili Crab was something that we could not resist consuming. It’s like being in Paris and not going to the Eiffel Tower. I have a lot more to say about Singapore so please come back to read my next posts.

Ku mojemu zdziwieniu Singapur jest o wiele bardziej  goracy i duszny, niz sie spodziewalam. Momentami bylo wrecz nie do zniesienia, kilka stopni roznicy w temperaturze bylo bardzo odczuwalne.  Na szczescie mielismy basen w hotelu i musze przyznac, ze plywanie podczas deszczu czy noca bylo jedna z najprzyjemniejszych atrakcji podczas naszego pobytu  w Singapurze.  W pierwszym dniu wybralismy sie na wycieczke lodzia po rzecze, obrzydliwie turystyczna atrakcja, ale dzieki temu mielismy wyrazniejszy obraz Singapuru. Wszyscy mowia, jak piekny Singapur jest noca i jak dobrze mozna tu zjesc, zgadzam sie z ta opinia w stu procentach. Nie mozna nie zauwazyc bardzo rozwinietej kultury jedzenia. Sa tutaj zarowno bardzo drogie i eleganckie restauracje, jak tez tanie uliczne butki z jedzeniem. Wbrew pozorom nie bylo tak latwo znalezc lokalnego taniego jedzenia. Musielismy spedzic sporo czasu, szukajac na necie wskazowek, gdzie sie kierowac. No i oczywiscie warte wspomnienia jest Clarke Quay, miejsce to bardzo przypomina mi Leister Square. Mozna tutaj dobrze zjesc, wypic drinka, pojsc na impreze. Jest bardzo popularne wieczorami, bylismy tam tylko raz i jakos nie mielismy ochoty wracac, ale jestem w stanie zrozumiec, dlaczego ludzie lubia tam spedzac wolny czas. Nie moglam uwierzyc, jak tanie sa taksowki w Singapurze w porownaniu do baaaaaaardzo drogiego alkoholu. Transport jest niesamowity, metro jest czyste, bardzo dobrze zorganizowane, z klimatyzacja, mozna uzywac telefon, jest tam zasieg. Bylam zszokowana, widzac, ze metro moze tak rewelacyjnie dzialac. Nie moglam oprzec sie pokusie porownania singapurskiego metra z londynskim transportem.  Krazy taka obiegowa opinia, ze Singapur jest mostem do krajow azjatyckich. Jest to kraj bardzo europejski, ale nie ma tu tak wielu Europejczykow, jak sie spodziewalam. Jest to bardzo nowoczesne, czyste, malutkie panstwo. 5 dni w zupelnosci wystarczylo, zeby zobaczyc wiekszosc ciekawszych miejsc w Singapurze.  Oczywiscie wypilismy Singapore Sling w Long bar at Raffle’s Hotel i sprobowalismy 3 roznych wersji narodowego dania - Chili Crab. Nie sprobowac tego to jak byc w Paryzu i nie zobaczyc wiezy Eiffla.

My last post from London

I have already said goodbye to all my London friends. Time flew so quickly and now we are sitting in the Airport Lounge at Heathrow waiting for our plane to depart at 11.30 am.  This May and a little bit of June was extremely  busy,  I was trying to meet up with friends for coffee, dinner, lunch, BBQ’s etc as often as possible. The weather, just to be evil, was amazing almost all May. It was so nice and warm but now we are going to arrive in Melbourne in the middle of winter! But at least we get five days in hot, hot, hot Singapore on the way. My next post will be from our hotel in Singapore.

Juz pozegnalam sie ze wszystkimi moimi londynskimi przyjaciolmi. Czas minal tak szybko a teraz jest juz 6 czerwiec, siedzimy w poczekalni lotniskowej Heathrow. Jemy sniadanie, mamy 3 godziny do odlotu. Pomyslalam, ze moze uda mi sie jeszcze wyslac mojego ostatniego londynskiego posta. Ostatni miesiac w Londynie byl wyjatkowo przepelniony atracjami, wyjscia na drinki, kolacje, spacery, lunche, grille etc. Chcialam sie spotkac sie z ludzmi tak czesto jak to tylko bylo mozliwe. A jak na zlosc pogoda byla piekna. Pelnia lata, 30 stopni. Jaka szkoda, ze musimy wyjechac wlasnie teraz w srodku lata do Australii, gdzie przywita nas zima. W drodze do Melbourne zatrzymujemy sie na 5 dni w Singapurze, a tam zdecydowanie na brak goracych dni nie bedziemy mogli narzekac. Moj nastepny post bedzie z hotelu w Singapurze. Do uslyszenia niebawem.

Home sweet home

Our flat is kind of like Clapham really, not pretty or modern but its “ours” and it’s very cozy. It is one of the many places which I will miss a lot. I am leaving many memories here, my moving in, little house parties and dinners with friends, decorating the flat (well making it more girly). As much as it is emotional to leave our place I am really  looking forward to creating new memories in our new house in Melbourne.

No nie tak do konca nasze, bo wynajmowane i dzielone ze wspolokatorem. Podobnie jak z okolica gdzie mieszkamy nasze mieskanie raczej nie jest ladne czy nowoczesne ale jest “nasze” i przytulne. Jedno z wielu miesc za ktorymi bede tesknila. Wiele wspomnien tutaj zostawiam , moja wprowadzka, urzadzanie mieszkania, imprezy, wspolne kolacje ze znajomymi …

KCB end of an era

This is not going to be a long post but I wanted to add a few pictures from my work  at Kensington College of Business, or KCB as it is known. I have been working there for 4.5 years. Years full of …mmm …mainly good memories. I met some great people, learned a bit and I think it is worth remembering.

 Nie bede rozpisywala sie w tym poscie. Ot dolaczam kilka zdjec z mojej pracy. Kensington College of Business, znane jako KCB. Przepracowalam tutaj 4.5 roku , byl to czas wypelniony wzlotami i upadkami, ale zdecydownie,  mimo wszytko, dobry czas.  Poznalam tu wielu wartosciowych ludzi i duzo sie nauczylam. Generalnie jest to miejsce warte zapamietania.
